LETTER FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN

One of the most inspiring attributes of Portland State’s School of Business is its deep connection with the community that surrounds us.  Through continuous and positive interaction with our region’s business, policy and community leaders, our faculty and students actively participate in the transformation of the urban environment.  It is the enduring mission of the School of Business to change lives, build community, and serve the economic and social vitality of our region.

As Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research, I gain great satisfaction in integrating our core ethos of “leadership, innovation, sustainability” into the MBA + curriculum.  These ethos derive from those we serve – our business leaders, our students, our alumni – and we strive to lead in how the ethos inform and structure our programs.  Through this work I believe we will continue to deepen the bond between Portland State and the community to live up to our mission.

Leadership.  Technical skills learned in MBA programs are necessary but insufficient to thrive in today’s world.  The Portland State MBA + program’s focus on leadership inspires students to develop the emotional intelligence and leadership competencies that promise the best opportunity for life-long career enhancement.

Innovation.  Continuously creating new value is essential for any organization.  But taking an idea from concept to practice is becoming increasingly challenging.  In the first year of the MBA + all students will take the Pioneering Innovation course and  throughout their time in the program they can continue to explore creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Sustainability.  Significant opportunities exist for creating value, serving society and addressing environmental issues.  The Portland State MBA+ program seeks to provide students with a strong business foundation along with the sensibilities and skill sets to recognize and capture sustainability-inspired value creation.

If you are not already a part of our community, I encourage you to join us. If you are a member already, thanks for making the journey so rewarding.

All the best,

R. Scott Marshall, Ph.D.
