CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Many MIM alumni have gone on to fill management positions at major corporations in the private sector, while others work in various government agencies and in international nongovernmental organizations. Higher salaries and increased job satisfaction are just two tangible benefits that students get from their degree. Our graduates report one thing in common: their MIM skills have been key to greater career success.
MIM alumni have gone on to fill management positions at major corporations including Adec, Nike, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Tektronix, Columbia Sportswear, IBM, MCI, Shimadzu Corp., and Univertical China, to name just a few. Some job titles of MIM alumni include International Marketing Coordinator, Manager of Asian Marketing, National Export Manager, Supply Chain Manager, and Business Development Associate.
Some graduates have gone on to work in various government agencies and in international nongovernmental organizations. Many of our alumni have pursued positions that offer opportunities for travel and interaction with new cultures. Many others simply enjoy being part of the excitement of commerce in the world’s fastest-moving economy. The range of alumni job titles is truly as diverse as our multinational student body.
MIM graduates know that a full measure of job satisfaction runs deeper than just title and salary. Our alumni report high job satisfaction because they have positioned themselves as specialists in a fast-growing niche of the economy. This means our graduates are in demand in today’s career marketplace. An astounding 94% of our 2006 graduating class were placed in jobs within 3 months of graduation!
Whatever direction you choose for your career, you will find an uncommon level of support from our program. Thanks to our location in downtown Portland and our deep connections to the business professionals and alumni who work in the area, PSU graduate business students have far greater opportunities to network and prepare for their future career paths.
Examples include:
Internships: Many students pursue internship opportunities on a part-time basis. Internships offer students experience in applying the skills they learn in the classroom to real-world business issues. Several opportunities are posted each term.
Alumni Networking Events that connect students to some of the more than 2,000 SBA alumni in the Portland metropolitan area.
Mentor Program: MIM students are paired with executives in their chosen fields for informal conversations about career options and planning.
Guest Speakers and Lecturers: Industry professionals often teach classes, bringing the "real world" into the classroom. Recent instructors drawn from industry include:
- Amy Celico, Deputy Director, Market Access & Compliance, Office of Chinese Economy, U.S. Dept. of Commerce
- T.J. Pempel, Director, Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkley
- Mr. Gareth C. Chang, Chairman & CEO, D4 Animation Studio
- Mr. Patrick Cooney, Executive Vice President, Europe and Middle East, EGL Global Logistics
- Mr. Sun DiPeng, Chairman & CEO, Baosteel Business Development Co.
Advisory Board: a group of over a dozen industry professionals who meet with the academic director to guide the program to best serve the economic needs of the region.
“We compete in a global market and Asia is one of the key global markets. We can hide our head in the sand to this fact or embrace it. We’ve come to realize that to keep our game at its peak we need to be competing with the world’s best. We are a small company so we don’t have as much margin for error. It’s critical for us to have people skilled in doing business in Asia.”
