MIM Mentor Program

What is it?

All Portland-area business professionals and PSU alumni are invited to participate in the MIM Mentor Program. From the business professional’s view, the chance to help make a positive difference in a student's professional life before they start their post-graduate careers can be very rewarding. Mentors serve multiple roles for MIM student: friend, coach, colleague and teacher.

For the MIM student, the program offers an opportunity to:

  • clarify their career goals
  • learn from another professional’s career experiences
  • establish an important networking relationship

With the guidance and support of a mentor, students are given opportunities to learn about the range of career opportunities available within an industry or function and to develop confidence interacting with senior business professionals.

How Does It Work?

The MIM Mentor Program is intentionally flexible. Commencing fall term, student and mentor are introduced to each other and then meet as often as the two prefer. Most of the MIM mentor-student teams meet on a monthly basis. Some of the topics covered in the mentor relationship are:

  • Creating informational interview opportunities with other professionals
  • Offering Invitations to attend professional gatherings
  • Critiquing resumes and cover letters

The MIM program realizes the importance of the mentoring relationship and greatly appreciates its participating mentors. If you're considering becoming a mentor and would like to receive more information about the program, please contact the Director of Graduate Career Services & Corporate Outreach.

"Mentoring has provided me with a tremendously rewarding and energizing way to give back to the university. I welcome the opportunity to actively engage in a program designed to develop the region's next generation of civic and business leaders.

There's something in it for me, too. Through conversations with my mentoree, I am exposed to what's happening in the academic world. I find tremendous satisfaction in simply helping someone — and it's been totally fun."
